HDMI CablesWhen you purchase an HDTV, you'll drop into the world of HDMI cables, optic fibers, and HD connectors. Just as with anything from the past, sometimes we'll long for the simplicity of days-gone-by. When you are dealing with such things as DVI (Digital Video Interface), you'll have to deal with such things as a 'DVI HDMI cable'. They have to keep inventing new interface plugs, because otherwise you'd plug a plug into one connector and it would blow the electronics in the other unit. So, you'll hear such terms as "Male DVI-D (Single Link) Connector". People always get confused as to what 'male' and 'female' mean. Sometimes a plug might be called male even though it has some pins that stick out and those pins go into holes. However, the whole term basically means, "If the Overall Plug has a Thing Which Sticks Out and it Fits into Another Connector," that is the male side.
A DVI-D connector is a strange one. It has three rows of 8 pins on one side and four strange pins separated by a cross on the other end. The DVI standard is based on a thing called the PanelLink serial format. Silicon Image, Inc. developed it, who was a semiconductor company. Then, it caught on. It's consists of four twisted-pair cables (the four that are in the cross). That passes the Red, the Green and the Blue signals and the Clock signal to the other side. Then, the other 24 pins pass the bits, which allow 24 bits-per-pixel. Since the timing is almost the same as a regular video signal, it works well. Next, there's the HDMI interface standard. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. This allows the transmission of digital data that hasn't been compressed. Such things as HD DVD players, the PlayStation3, Blu-Ray Disc players, and even PCs all are starting to use this interface. It allows up to 8 channels of digital audio and high definition video. There are DVI to HDMI adapters out there, because DVI is the other standard which is catching on. Since HDMI is an uncompressed way of connecting, it's not dependent upon the various digital standards that the television industry is shoving upon us. In the old universe of cat 6 cables, there comes the new age of a fiber optic audio cable. Monster Cable is a company which makes HDMI 1000HD Ultra-High Speed cables and such. Their1000HD-1M goes for around $70, whereas their 1000HD-4M goes for $120. They're professional HDMI cables, their cables and adapters have been developed jointly between themselves and the HDMI founder. They greatly increase the bandwidth for 1080p video, giving ultra-high definition. This means you'll have extended color, and get the kind of quality that you'd only see if you went to a theatre. |
