Cat 5 Or Cat 6 Cables, What's The Difference?

Cat 6 cables or 'category 6' is a very common cable. All cable definitions are laid out by ANSI, so the Cat 6 was made to support what was called 1000Base-T connections. Also called GbE and sometimes referred to as GigE. This allowed 22 to 24 gauge wire, unshielded, (UTP) or shielded (STP) twisted pair, or (ScTP) which is called screened twisted pair. This allows the signal to be sent up to 250 Mega Hertz up to 220 meters in distance. Cat 5, on the other hand, can only go up to speeds of 100 MHz. Cat 6 vs cat 5 cables, and then¡ the difference is speed.

So, basically each time you see a leap from Cat 5 to Cat 6, that meant some really bright person came up with an even faster way to do it than the way they used to do it using nearly the same connector types. A category 6 cable looks almost exactly the same as a CAT5 cable would. The only way you can tell the difference from the outside is that it has CAT number printed on the cable. If you're going from a 10/100 board, then cat 6 patch cables aren't really necessary.

When you want to have little to no introduction of any outside noise, you use such things as fiber optic audio cable. Fiber optic cable goes at GHz speeds, so it's not necessary unless you're passing digital information from one place to another, really fast. The new HD systems need to transfer digital at astounding speeds. If you tried doing that with a regular coaxial cable, the signal would just jump out of the wire. Even when you get up to speeds above about 1 MHz, signals start doing strange things. If you were trying to send fast digital signals through one of the old coaxial cable connectors, the direct 'on-then-off' of the signal that denotes zeroes and ones would start rounding off.

If you have a stream of electricity coming through a wire, you can only tell if it's a one or a zero by having the electricity cut off abruptly, and then go back on abruptly. When it starts rounding, it is not going on abruptly any more, nor is it going off abruptly. How does the computer tell whether it's a one or a zero, then? That's the problem, it can't.

Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables do their magic by twisting every one of the two wires that pass through the cable. In this manner, they can determine a difference between the two wires, and from that determine if there was any deterioration of the signal. With fiber optic cables, the trick of twisting each set of two cables to keep cross-talk down was not necessary.

So, cat 6 cables are for sending things up to speeds of 600 MHz, if you're talking about "STP, ScTP". On the other hand "USP, ScTP, STP" can go digital to 200 Mhz or 10 Gbps. If you need to go faster than that, you go by fiber optics.
