So, You're Looking For Fiber Optic Patch Cables

Since fiber optic patch cables use light to transfer the signal, they need to translate the electronic signal into light impulses which are then pulsed into the cable. If you're talking about HDMI cables, they're a premium way of passing a video signal through a wire using light. You can't beat light, as giving you the best signal ever, so video passed through an HDMI cable will be perfect once it gets to the other end. Of course you need an HDMI capable unit in order to use them. The maximum bitrate over one of these cables will be up to 4.9 Gbit/second. It supports up to 165 Mega pixels / 24-bit video. Or, with HDMI version 1.1 and above, there's added DVD-A Audio support (but not SACD Support yet).

It's now past HDMI versions 1.3b as for the HDMI specifications. One good thing with HDMI, is that they kept it backwards-compatible so you don't have to worry that the cable won't work on HDMI version 1.3b if you got your cable at the beginning of the specification determinations.

If you're purchasing cat 6 cables, they're defined for HD installs. The 1080p protocol utilizes CAT-6 high-definition shielded cables for HDTV installations. It looks much like any Ethernet cable. A 14-foot cable ranges around $20, on-line. High quality CAT6 (category 6) cable are patch cables which allow internetworking for your HD gear. It's also good for phone line transfer, networking of other systems and can be used with the proper kinds of phone lines. It's designed for Gigabit Ethernet applications, where they give you high data transfers. They work with ATM and gigabit speeds. Standard Cat 6 cables can't keep up with HD shielded versions.

If you need coaxial cable connectors, then that's a completely different transfer system. With coaxial, first the wire has an inner copper conductor with a dielectric (insulator) over it. Next is a braided metallic shield, or a metalized foil shield, and outside is a plastic jacket to protect the cable. First invented in 1929, and used commercially since 1941, it comes in hundreds of different varieties nowadays for doing any kinds of applications such as wiring up the old kinds of televisions (non-HD). RG-59 was a standard coaxial cable, RG standing for "Radio Guide". Most non-industrial RG cable is RG-6, nowadays. There's no way that RG cables can compete with fiber optic patch cables. The speed that can be sent through RG cables is nothing compared with that you can get from other methods.

If you're thinking of making your own cables, look up "multimode fiber optic reference cable kits" on the internet. You'll find such kits as ST (Meter) to ST (Test), ST (Meter) to LC (Test), ST (Meter) to FC (Test), etc. These will contain simplex 62.5/125 or 50/125 (depending on the options that you chose). These are a kind which have two simplex ST mating devices. The thing to do is look on the internet and see photos of what the connectors look like. Some have two prongs that stick out to the sides. You press them onto the connector, then twist the connector's end to lock them on. The ST (Meter) to LC (Test) choice, for example, also comes with two of the Simplex Zirconia LC mating sleeves.

They tend to keep the cables as short as possible to reduce any distortion. There are singlemode cables, and multimode. Singlemode cables come in different ways, too. You'll have to determine just what kind of connector you have. There are ST-ST, SC-SC, ST-SC, MTRJ-MTRJ, MTRJ-ST, MTRJ-SC. Look up 'cables SC' to see what an SC connector looks like and 'cables ST' to see an ST connector. Your manual should show just which type is on your particular HD unit.

Fiber optics allow digital signals, either audio or video, to pass at Gigabyte speeds.
